I'm sorry that I called you – I won't do it anymore," Jessie said worriedly. Regret instantly washed over her and she tried to squirm out of his grasp, only to be held firmly in place with his arms. "Ten more minutes and then we're going back to my place to sleep. "Ten more minutes," he whispered, the huskiness of his voice making her shiver. Jessie was tugged out of her thoughts when Leom gently pulled her into his embrace, resting his chin on top of her head and holding her tightly as a cool breeze blew through the air. It was so beautiful underneath the majesty of the midnight sky – Jessie always came here whenever she couldn't sleep. Jessie sighed, turning away from him to cast her eyes back over the lake. Leon's wordless gaze was enough to tell Jessie what she already knew. His eyebrows knitted together and he engulfed her hand with both of his, holding Jessie's fingers to his chest. "Then why did you ask me why we're here?" The teasing tone of Jessie's voice betrayed the dark circles underneath her eyes and she grabbed the boy's arm for balance when she almost toppled into the water. The coolness of the liquid made her smile, and it wasn't long before Leon knelt down beside Jessie. She laughed briefly, letting go of his hand to bend down and touch the water with her fingertips. "I told you, Jessie, I'll always be with you if you can't sleep," he murmured. He shook his head and tugged her towards the direction of the lake, the rhythmic lapping of the water a sweet accompaniment to the silent melody of the night. "If you're tired, you don't have to stay." "Leon" Her voice wrapped around him like a gentle embrace, as pleasant as the first rays of sunlight after a rainy day. It was no wonder that she preferred to be here, outside, rather than cooped inside her tattered room. The night was magical – a diamond amidst rubies and opals. The dark, endless midnight sky stretched across the horizon, specks of white painted across the untouchable canvas. The mystical, circular light above radiated its luminescent glow to create an ethereal streak across the surface, the water glittering like the sparkle in a person's eyes. Jessie's lips slowly curved upwards and she slowly glanced away from him to gaze over the lake, breathing in the scent of nature's finest creation. "Why not?" Jessie's voice harboured a tinge of confusion as apprehension took its hold, her clouded thoughts preventing her from thinking rationally. She paused in her steps, tilting her head to the side as she considered his question. ![]() "Jessie" His voice was emotionless, flat, as he spoke his next words.
